Top things to ask an aged care provider
The right questions cut through the weeds quickly. Below are the ones worth asking, grouped by what matters most, with a note on why each counts and, for the ones that matter most, what a good answer sounds like. (If you’re still building your shortlist, our guide on what to look for is the companion to this one.)
A quick note before you start: a strong provider welcomes these questions. If any of them make a provider defensive or vague, that tells you something in itself.
About the care itself
You’re choosing a provider for the long haul, so you want one that fits the person rather than fitting the person into a standard roster.
- What’s your full range of services, and can you scale support up or down as needs change?
- How do you tailor care to the individual?
- What happens if my loved one’s needs change – is there a reassessment, and how does the plan adjust?
- How often do you review the care plan, and who’s part of that?
What a good answer sounds like: a clear yes on flexibility, a genuine interest in the person rather than the paperwork, and specialised support – like a restorative care pathway – available if the day comes that it’s needed.
About the people
A provider is only ever as good as the person who walks through the door, so this is the section to press on.
- What qualifications and training do your carers have?
- Are all carers police-checked and screened before they start?
- What happens when our regular carer is on leave or unwell?
- How do you decide which carer to match with which person?
What a good answer sounds like: screening and training taken as a given, and a real, thought-through approach to consistency. You want to hear how they keep the same carers coming back, not just that they’ll “do their best.” You can see how we approach this as a point of comparison.
About communication
When you’re relying on a provider for someone you love, you need to be able to reach them, and to know what’s going on.
- Do we have a single point of contact, or a different person each time?
- How will you keep family informed – including any family who live interstate or overseas?
- What’s your process if we want to raise a concern or something goes wrong?
- How do you handle a change or a cancellation at short notice?
What a good answer sounds like: a named contact, a clear way of keeping family in the loop, and a straightforward complaints process they’re happy to explain rather than gloss over.
About cost
How open a provider is about money is one of the clearest signals of how they’ll treat you overall.
- Is your pricing all-inclusive? (Providers aren’t allowed to charge separate entry, exit or administration fees, so this should be an easy yes.)
- Will we receive itemised monthly statements?
- How do your prices compare to the government’s published national price summary for each service?
- Can you help us understand what we’ll contribute, based on our situation?
What a good answer sounds like: clear pricing put in writing without hesitation, and a willingness to walk you through how funding and contributions work. You can also look at how we handle pricing to see what open looks like.
About registration and accountability
This one’s quick, and it rules out anyone who shouldn’t be in the running.
- Are you a registered Support at Home provider?
- What’s your standing with the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission?
- Have you had any complaints or enforcement action we should know about?
Any legitimate provider will answer these without flinching, and you can confirm registration independently through My Aged Care.
